My writing background
My undergraduate degree in philosophy gave me a hunger to explore ethical questions at an individual level through fiction. It’s one thing to think that we know how people ought to behave, but it’s another to delve into the personal context of a character and understand why they may choose to behave differently.
I started writing short stories after I graduated, finding my voice through a series of short stories focused on families and family dynamics. You can read some of those stories on my publications list.
I also began writing novels, and have written four (maybe five, depending on what counts as ‘finished’) novels. Each one has taught me about character, style, passion, structure, and the sheer brute force it takes to finish a novel.
I completed my Masters in Creative Writing at the University of Birmingham in 2021, after classes disrupted by Covid lockdowns and far too few visits to see family. I’ve now returned to complete my PhD on Bound in Shallows.
Other context
I grew up in Canberra, the illusive capital of Australia, and currently live in Birmingham, UK. I work in digital education at the University of Birmingham.
